On May 21, the American premium cable network HBO aired the third episode of βChernobyl,β a new miniseries about the catastrophic nuclear accident in April 1986 that rocked the Soviet Union. After two episodes, with the initial fire extinguished and early panic beginning to subside, the focus shifts to questions about why the reactor exploded and who was responsible for the disaster. The third episode of βChernobylβ is a conversation about causes and consequences. The miniseries has shed the suspense of its first two installments, when the story unfolded like a disaster movie, and it now wants to know the reason for this tragedy. While viewers may have difficulty grasping the scale of the βwarβ being waged inside the Exclusion Zone, itβs impossible to miss the human sacrifices it required. Of course, you can criticize the episode for excessive melodrama: Legasov is suddenly partial to Khomyuk, and the miners who stand up to a coal minister recruiting them for the Chernobyl liquidation effort are too theatrical. There was an unprecedented steam explosion that completely wrecked a reactor. Among the millions of people in the region, there may well be additional cases of cancer, although the number will be hard to pin down. But other parts clearly are dramatized. For example, one of the characters in the miniseries is there to unravel the mystery of what happened. But that had to be dramatized, because in the real event there wasnβt much mystery. For those unaware of what went down on the fateful day of the explosion, you should know that it occurred during a routine safety test at the Chernobyl power plant that was located near Pripyat in Ukraine. While the test was carried out late at night, the safety systems of the plant were deliberately turned off but the design flaws triggered an explosion thus releasing radioactive material into the atmosphere. Needless to say that the uncontrolled nuclear fallout was massive and its effects were felt across Ukraine, Russia, Belarus and even went as far as Scandinavia and some parts of Western Europe as well. Soon the effects of the nuclear radiation began to show and over the next few weeks 134 servicemen were hospitalized since they showed signs of acute radiation sickness. 28 of them died in the months that followed. Till date, the complete damage caused by this explosion has not been comprehensively assessed.
