I think Jared Harris is one of the finest actors working today, so I'm excited about Chernobyl. I liked Harris a great deal on "Mad Men", found him one of the most sympathetic characters on that show. The last we saw of him in that series was him hanging himself from his office door. I have HBO at the moment because I got it to see the final season of Game of Thrones, so I watched Chernobyl's debut last night. Within the first seven minutes, there was Harris hanging himself again. Talk about weird type casting. That aside, it was a compelling first hour, a real horror show of how an inflexible bureaucracy's first instinct in a disaster isn't protecting the people, but rather protecting the bureaucrats from blame. I'll see two more installments before canceling after GOT ends, but if what comes next is as good as what they have already shown, I may hang on to see the rest of that. Didn't the Soviet nuclear plant really look like it was done on the cheap? What a rickety looking place to be handling such dangerous materials. Maybe one could argue that this is the start of the confusing stuff, but self-contained, the episode added a lot to the show, and gave us plenty of great stories later on. Sideshow freaks, underdeveloped fetus, and a general humorous tone to the episode. There was plenty of horror with the Fiji Mermaid, and yet the whole situation was funny. The weird combination made the episode lots of fun. The concept for this episode isnג€™t original as it has been done multiple times in various mediums; however, that does not mean the various incarnations of the concept are bad. The concept of timeloops itself allow for great creative freedom which usually ends up with a good episode. The X-Files did it very well with several ongoing gags such as the waterbed leaking. The idea behind the episode was so good that Fringe copied the concept, having someone be able to control the mind of others. What was unique about Modell was that he was able to affect human physiology. From a distance, itג€™s beautiful. An unearthly shaft of blue light shoots from the core of the V.I. Lenin Nuclear Plant in Pripyat, Ukraine and into the heavens. People from the surrounding neighborhoods, awakened by the sound and shake of an explosion, leave their homes and gather to watch the glow. As radioactive ash falls on the crowds like snow, they watch the inferno and talk about what might have gone wrong at the local nuclear power plant. This is just one of the many harrowing scenes from Chernobyl, a new miniseries airing on HBO. Chernobyl is a horror story, one that borrows the tropes and themes of horror fiction to tell the story of a nuclear nightmare compounded by human arrogance and bureaucratic lies. Who tf is going around traumatizing little kids with pictures of nuclear devastation? 10, apparently. not sure why. WWII last year of elementary school, and then last year of middle school, and then again last year of high school. I'm currently watching it. Well the USSR wasn't really socialist. The USSR wasnt really communist. They were socialist, and were never able to achieve communism. I didn't say they were communist. Just that they were not purely socialist. Dude, back out now. Run for your life. They called themselves a socialist government, they modeled their entire structure on socialism, so why say they weren't really socialist? That's like trying to say that the US isnt really capitalist. Same. And my parents to me were bastions of liberalism, now I find them super right wing compared to me. This is a myth that's largely been debunked. Most people stick with their political affiliations as they grow older. The whole "people get more conservative as they get older" line is Reagan-era bullshit. It was when I grew up I saw just how important and vital taxes are to a progressive and advancing society. Making money and then becoming Conservative is like finally affording a car and then bitching about public transport getting in your way. This doesn't make any sense. Absolutely.
