As the government functionaries gather to decide how to handle a disaster they donβt yet realize will ruin Pripyat for generations, an aging and unnamed bureaucrat stands as if heβs going to deliver a sermon. βWe seal off the city,β he says, dooming thousands. βNo one leaves. We cut the phone lines. Contain the spread of misinformation. The first firefighters come when called. Theyβve been told that they only have to put out a fire on the roof of the power plant. As they pour water into the raging inferno, the camera pulls back and the firefighters suffuse in a yellow sickly glow. One man who picked up a hunk of graphite with gloved hands, wails as the flesh boils from his hands. Still, it's hard to isolate the widespread and long-term effects of radiation. The wildlife there, still, has flourished, with 400 animal species in the dense woodlands that have cropped up since the disaster. To this day, Chernobyl remains one of the most radioactive places on Earth. Even though decades have passed, nuclear experts say the area will not be inhabitable for at least 3,000 years, though a few locals have relocated or remained there because they consider it home.|Who is in the cast of Chernobyl? Jared Harris plays Valery Legasov in Chernobyl on Sky Atlantic and HBO. Valery Legasov was the Soviet inorganic chemist who was appointed as the chief of the commission investigating the Chernobyl disaster. While the Soviet government were continuing to downplay the scale of the disaster, Legasov was the man who challenged their version of events and was responsible for saving eastern Europe from near extinction. Legasov put together a plan which would reduce the spread of radiation and prevent the explosion of three remaining reactors. He was also responsible for spotting the exposed graphite rods on the roof of the power plant, which eventually forced the Kremlin to come clean about what really had happened at Chernobyl. He is also responsible for trying to figure out how you contain this event that has occurred, everyone knows it could happen but no one has planned for what to do if it does happen. The real Legasov, he suffers the same fate. The poorly performing CBS drama was yanked from it's 9 PM Sunday timeslot. Cold Case will move from 10 PM to 9 PM which probably won't help the long running drama. CBS is struggling on Sundays and Cold Case looks like it will be the next victim. I'm guessing CBS will burn off the remaining episodes at some time, but for now there will be repeats of NCIS: Los Angeles and Criminal Minds. I enjoyed this episode much more than the previous few episodes. The action was ramped up, and there was less of the other people I don't enjoy watching (Angel, LaGuerta). This season has been better than the previous two, but I find myself hard pressed to be amazed by the same antics every year. Trinity kidnapping the boy added another twists to the craziness that is Arthur Mitchell. Starting the cycle by killing himself showed acknowledgement that when his sister was died, the previous Arthur died along with her. But he can still play with trains first. John Lithgow did an incredible job as he does every week and continues to be creepy and imposing. Chernobyl 6 Episode.
Thirty three years ago, after an explosion at a nearby power plant, the city of Pripyat in (what is now) Ukraine was evacuated. As part of the preparation for the new HBO series βChernobyl,β writer Craig Mazin visited the abandoned city, just one step in the process of trying to ensure that the five-episode show captured the full scope of the now-infamous disaster. You get a real sense of it,β Mazin told IndieWire. βThe story weβre telling is a Soviet story. Itβs a story of the Soviet system, which was terrible. And it is a story of the Soviet citizenry who were the subject of awful visitations by Czars and revolutions and Nazis and Stalin and forced famine, and then Chernobyl. So I wanted to honor that by telling it from the point of view of them. Even when tasked with conveying some of the more explicit, tragic aftermath of the reactor malfunction, βChernobylβ finds insight via the most seemingly mundane of details. βThat required kind of both living inside that mind in that culture and sharing the scripts early on with people who grew up in Soviet Ukraine and having them vet through things,β Mazin said.
