I think Jared Harris is one of the finest actors working today, so I'm excited about Chernobyl. I liked Harris a great deal on "Mad Men", found him one of the most sympathetic characters on that show. The last we saw of him in that series was him hanging himself from his office door. I have HBO at the moment because I got it to see the final season of Game of Thrones, so I watched Chernobyl's debut last night. Within the first seven minutes, there was Harris hanging himself again. Talk about weird type casting. That aside, it was a compelling first hour, a real horror show of how an inflexible bureaucracy's first instinct in a disaster isn't protecting the people, but rather protecting the bureaucrats from blame. I'll see two more installments before canceling after GOT ends, but if what comes next is as good as what they have already shown, I may hang on to see the rest of that. Didn't the Soviet nuclear plant really look like it was done on the cheap? What a rickety looking place to be handling such dangerous materials. It also was tragic. Thirty-one plant personnel, firefighters and other emergency responders died within three months from the explosion, radiation poisoning and other causes. Among the millions of people in the region, there may well be additional cases of cancer, although the number will be hard to pin down. But other parts clearly are dramatized. For example, one of the characters in the miniseries is there to unravel the mystery of what happened. But that had to be dramatized, because in the real event there wasnβt much mystery.
