Go watch HBOs Chernobyl, the show is a 5 episode miniseries on how government lies and coverups can cause devastating effects. Skarsgard's performance when he found out the soviets lied about how strong the radiation was so the German robot was ineffective was so goddamn good. It kind of sums up the whole situation. The state trying to protect an image while actually obtaining the help they need, both from foreign powers and their own citizens, but actually screwing everyone over, including the state itself. I'm old enough to remember it happening, and I remember the way the news felt stifled because they could only report on what the USSR were telling them. It wasn't a big deal, it was a fire not a meltdown, everything was under control, radiation levels were low, while at the time the radiation was contaminating livestock in the UK. Completely the opposite to the Fukushima disaster, where I watched the concrete roof of a reactor building blown into low-earth orbit live on TV, while sitting in a pub.|ג€Chernobylג€ is a show about the unpredictability of nature and the severity of ignoring the raw power of an unseen enemy. But with the overwhelming toll that this historical event takes on those caught in its grasp, the HBO series still finds room for some unexpected, conflicting emotions. ג€Thereג€™s an absurdity that you have to kind of recognize. Horror stories work because they tap into real and prescient fears of the audience, and nuclear power plants are a reality for billions of people. USA made a very interesting move last week. All three of the shows moved to the 10 PM timeslot. Previously, USA had focused on few days of the week, choosing to put their shows together. Now it looks like they are trying to expand their programming into the other weekdays. Given their recent successes, it isn't a bad idea if they continue to give us the same quality programming. The ratings the past few years and especially over this summer have proved that the network can hold up against broadcast programming. The move of White Collar to its own separate day surprised me. It had previously been scheduled to go after Burn Notice on Thursdays which would have helped greatly since Burn Notice made Royal Pains an instant hit. Based on the current ratings, White Collar may not be able to survive on its own, so it will be interesting to see if the freshman show can survive on a new night with tougher competition. Before reading the list, keep these facts in mind. The KGBג€”the USSRג€™s secret police and intelligence agencyג€”routinely suppressed news of nuclear accidents, keeping them secret even from reactor operators who could have learned lessons from those events.
