Thirty three years ago, after an explosion at a nearby power plant, the city of Pripyat in (what is now) Ukraine was evacuated. As part of the preparation for the new HBO series βChernobyl,β writer Craig Mazin visited the abandoned city, just one step in the process of trying to ensure that the five-episode show captured the full scope of the now-infamous disaster. You get a real sense of it,β Mazin told IndieWire. βThe story weβre telling is a Soviet story. Itβs a story of the Soviet system, which was terrible. And it is a story of the Soviet citizenry who were the subject of awful visitations by Czars and revolutions and Nazis and Stalin and forced famine, and then Chernobyl. So I wanted to honor that by telling it from the point of view of them. Even when tasked with conveying some of the more explicit, tragic aftermath of the reactor malfunction, βChernobylβ finds insight via the most seemingly mundane of details. βThat required kind of both living inside that mind in that culture and sharing the scripts early on with people who grew up in Soviet Ukraine and having them vet through things,β Mazin said. The first two episodes have quite a bit of radiation sickness, and the third and fourth start to show the individuals who were in chernibyl at the time of the accident weeks later dying in a hospital. That is very graphic and difficult to watch. βt want it watered down, also to respect those who actually went through those horrible things. The show is very tasteful but firm with reality imo. If you read Voices of Chernobyl, some of the stuff they describe, such as a manβs face just being βgoneβ from radiation burns wasnβt shownβjust implied. It's HBO, they have fantastic makeup people and pull no punches. You spend an episode in the hospital watching several people die. The rest of the episodes don't show much radiation sickness beside a lot of people puking. Very. Radiation burns are accurately depicted so it's literally 'skin melting off' graphic. Chernobyl Season 2 Release Date: When will it premiere? βChernobylβ Season 1 premiered on May 6, 2019 on HBO in the US and on Sky Atlantic in the UK. The show ran for five episodes and ended on June 3, 2019 becoming one of the highest rated shows ever. As far as the next season goes, we donβt have an official announcement yet. Though since the show was conceived as a mini series, it is highly unlikely that it will see another season. Having said that, stranger things have happened in the TV world. The HBO mini-series, Chernobyl, began this past weekend. It's a dark story of the multiple human errorsβin execution and far more important, in judgementβthat resulted in the greatest civilian nuclear disaster in human history. Some might think that Chernobyl is another Hollywood-generated anti-nuclear power film a la "China Syndrome," but the creator of the film, Craig Mazin, disagrees. He tweeted: βThe lesson of Chernobyl isnβt that modern nuclear power is dangerous. Hmmm. "Lying, arrogance, and suppression of criticism." I can think of one group that has trafficked in those things over the past few years. Spare me the argument that crazies like Alex Jones are representative of the people who have been censored/banned. Ironically, the same group that traffics in "lying, arrogance, and suppression of criticism" is a collection of minor league communist wannabes who think that the state can and should control our lives and the narrative in all things. Just like the party apparatus that was in place during Chernobyl, the wannabes think the narrative trumps all. And just like the party apparatus that existed when Chernobyl happened, they are dangerous.|Game of Thrones may be over, but HBOβs top-reviewed show is still running. These scores are based of user reviews, which seem to skew towards HBO dramas and nature documentaries. If youβre worried that these numbers could be skewed by disappointed Game of Thrones fans trying to embarrass the showβs co-creators by boosting another HBO series, you can rest assured this isnβt some bizarre case of reverse review bombing. A quick look at the reviews reveal a real passion for both the show and the history itβs based on. Itβs not a documentary, so not each and every detail is accurate, yet I would still call it authentic. The creators got the important stuff rightβ¦ Both of my parents worked at Chernobyl plant, I grew up hearing stories and versions of what happened. I think this show is the best depiction of the Chernobyl disaster and the stories of its victims. This show is to remind all of us of the cost of lies. Plenty of other reviews cite personal experience, a parent or spouse who experienced Chernobyl and whoβs story matches up with HBOβs show. Others simply note how powerful the miniseries is. βIβll never love this show but I will forever have had my eyes opened by it,β writes stephenpdodds. Beyond the somewhat surprising news that a brand new HBO miniseries is dominating IMDbβs TV charts, thereβs a few other interesting details here. HBO clearly dominates with four shows in the top 10. Aside from Breaking Bad, the rest of this list if all nature or space documentaries, which makes sense considering the incredible popularity Planet Earth and the many shows it inspired.
